A true near death experience
THE INCIDENT
It was a Saturday evening, when i finished my private Physics tution and walked to the main roads to hire an auto rickshaw. The story is five years old, when I was 17 and a student in 11th standard/grade. I was doing my plus twos(11th and 12th grade) studies from a popular school in the main city area, which was 45 kms away from my home. So me and my friends had this arrangement where we had a small flat in the main city very close to our new school and on weekends we would take a short hour ride to our home and stay there till the Monday morning when we journey back to the city. Without a doubt we were always eager for Saturday or any school holidays to travel back home and eat good food, spend time with family and my precious TV, watching Doraemon all the time. (LOL!! Right!)
Evening is a rush hour on the roads of the city, Dhanbad, if any one is interested. All the auto rickshaws just passed by without stopping because they were all over filled with passengers, like 2 times the number of people a rickshaw is made for. I was growing anxious, with every passing minute I was more closer to losing the earliest train to the station close to my house. The consequence would be waiting another hour alone at the railway station for the next train to come. Finally an auto rickshaw showed up and stopped before me. In a small commercial vehicle made to sit 7-8 people, 12 were seated. The vehicle was crammed and overloaded, way beyond the level of safety. But I was in a rush. The driver offered me a seat beside him, hardly enough to occupy my tiny ass. And instead of refusing, I took it.
The auto started like a massively loaded train and accelerated slowly, into the busy lanes of Dhanbad. From one road to another, it kept moving slow and steady due to the traffic. That's when it turned towards the final street, "the court road" which would lead us straight to the Railway Station. And the road was busy but fast enough so the driver accelerated one last time before the journey finishes. That's when two seemingly drunk dudes riding very very fast on a sports bike tried taking a very sharp turn around our vehicle and hit it hard. The bike slipped and rolled ahead on that road while the auto rickshaw lost its balance and fell off the road towards one side throwing all its passenger out, while me sitting on the right most position it threw me right on to the road, in the very middle, with massive vehicles in high speed accelerating right towards me. I heard faint screeching sound of breaks and fainted even before my body hit the road.
WHEN I WOKE UP IN A HOSPITAL
I slowly opened my eyes. It seemed white everywhere. I had no idea how long I was blacked out. It took me some time to realize I was in an ICU, on a very uncomfortable stretcher. And right beside me some doctors where performing some eye surgery on an old lady. I concluded it was a cataract procedure but I didn't understand why was I laid there alongside. Were they going to perform any procedure on me? Did I broke the arm or something? Up until now I was not feeling any pain in my body and just then it suddenly started. A very harsh burning sensation from my severely grazed left arm, my left hip and left side of my head with deadly muscular pain from hips and legs. It was more painful than anything I have ever felt. I still remember it faintly. Clearly being in so much of pain, I called for the doctor. He told me to wait till he finishes his surgery. After sometime, he injected me with Tetanus Toxoid and Analgesics and told me that there is no severe injury. He also told me that they have used my phone to call my parents and they will be here soon.
I was taken out of ICU and moved to a general ward which was basically a large hall with too many beds in it and none of them were free. All they could do was provide me with a mattress to rest on. That was my first experience with a government hospital and it was not going good. I couldn't find my phone so I asked a gentle man standing near me for his phone and he was kind enough to do that for me. I dialed my father. My mom picked up and by her voice I could tell she had been crying her eyes out. She was so relieved on hearing my voice, she started crying even more and asked me a million questions. I assured her that I was okay and it was nothing major. She said they would be there in a few minutes, that made me feel so relieved its hard to express.
My parents reached there accompanied by a neighbor. It took them no time to realize the hospital was a pathetic one and got me discharged. I was taken to a nice private hospital where I had my own room and all other services were better too. I got X-Rays done for any suspected fractures, MRI for my head injury and my wounds cleaned and covered. We had dinner together, well, others did not me and then my mother slept with me. The next day I was discharged and I went back home with my parents.
MY PARENT'S FIRST REACTION
My dad was in his office when he got the call. A stranger on the other line asked him if Abhishek was his son. He said yes and got bombarded with the fact that i had met with an accident and was in an ICU. Now what he didn't knew was that i was in ICU since there was no other room or bed free to accommodate me but it translated the wrong way to my father. He got dead scared and didn't want to tell my mom over phone. He drove his car where he would find my mom. It was evening around 7 I think and its the evening walk time for my mother with the other women of the locality. My father reached there and told her to get in the car because its urgent. My mother couldn't understand. He drove her home and told her to dress up and get all the cash she had, just in case. He went over to the neighbor and got a strong uncle we know, that's in case I need to be moved. My mom still had no clue. They all got in the car and drove towards Dhanbad. In the midway to my journey, my dad cracked the news to my mother and she was devastated!!! She started crying hysterically, scared of all things thet kept coming to her mind, cursing herself for letting her self imagine anything so bad happening to me. Few minutes in and another unknown number rang my fathers phone. My mother picked it up and there I was, assuring her that it was a minor accident and was hardly harmed. A sigh of relief but it goes without saying, the crying continued......Oh my beautiful, sweet mother.
So thats the story of the accident that I suffered which even though not grieveous, could have been so.
Thank you guys, will be back soon with more stories....
