Our Society and Our Doctors

Image
A lot has changed over the past few years. When I was a child my parents used to say that being a Doctor is the greatest profession in the world and that Doctors are next to God. Now that I am about to be one I have a very different perspective. Were my parents naïve or has things really changed so much. I don't know about the rest of the world but here in India the sacred relationship between a doctor and a patient is no longer sacred and its a two way street. Every week in the news cycle theres a report about some Doctor who messed up and that the people are furious. The immediate inference amongst people is that the quality of health system has fallen drastically. What they fail to realise is that due to improved technology and connectivity, Media reports every single medical mess up to the public which was not possible few years back. Doctors are human beings too. They have a life and their own set of problems. And yes they mess up sometimes. Its only human to do so. No

El Dorado, by Shakira: My Review

Image
After waiting and praying to the latina 'goddess' for 3 years, she has finally blessed us with her next album 'El Dorado'. The 11th studio album of the Queen of the Spanish Language- Shakira is here and saying its fabulous would be a gross under statement. Now about the name of the album, El Dorado (meaning 'the golden one') " was the term used by the Spanish Empire to describe a mythical tribal chief of the Muisca of Colombia, who, as an initiation rite, covered himself with gold dust and submerged in Lake Guatavita. The legends surrounding El Dorado changed over time, as it went from being a man, to a city, to a kingdom, and then finally an empire. A second location for El Dorado was inferred from rumors, which inspired several unsuccessful expeditions in the late 1500s in search of a city called Manõa on the shores of Lake Parime. Two of the most famous of these expeditions were led by Sir Walter Raleigh. In pursuit of the legend, Spanish conquista

Taking India to the World: Priyanka Chopra

Image
She is an actor, a singer, a dancer, a director, a producer, a model, a fashionista, a philanthropist, a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, a no one to a Global Icon story: Priyanka Chopra is living the dream and she very well deserves it. The story began in 2000 when a girl born and brought up at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand won the Miss India World title and went on to win Miss World beauty pageant. I am a huge huge fan of Priyanka Chopra, not from the very beginning, but from the times when she showed the world how versatile of an actor she is. My favourite movies of her would be Bajirao Mastani, Mary Kom and Fashion. Other than that most of the projects she is choosing these days are very diverse and high in Quality. This careful curating of her work is quite new actually. Like every other beautiful women who wins a beauty pageant or dates Salman Khan, Bollywood embraces them with arms wide open. After winning the Miss World title Bollywood directors flocked to her doors to sign her up

I Confess I am a Shopaholic

Image
If you think only women have a tendency to get addicted to shopping, then let me tell you sir/madam, guys can be just as obsessed with it. Ask me! I have been, for years. There's nothing quite like it, the satisfaction and joy and warmth that shopping brings. If it were a scientific profession, there sure would be a Noble in my future. :p The first time I watched this movie "Confessions of a shopaholic", I had no idea this would be my go to future, kinda. Well in a milder way, I donot have a $16000 debt on my head but there is some here and there. :p It all started in New Delhi, when me and my bestie realised making compromises here and there in daily life leaves a lot of room for fun. Like movies everyday and buying new watches just cuz the present one has gotten "sweaty". Since then shopping has become my drug. Whenever I'm sad or depressed, I wanna shop. whenever I'm lonely, shopping keeps me company. And when I'm happy, shopping makes me ha

Marriage- A Celebration or A Humdrum of Formalities

Image
My friends would know, just last week my sister got married and I flew home for the occasion but that wasn't the only purpose. Being from a Brahmin family, essentially the priests of the Hindu religion and the supreme of the myriad of castes it hosts, I have to undergo a ritual called 'Upnayan sanskar' in order to become a Brahmin and apparently its a big deal. However it did destroy my life. I had to lose all my hairs and be bald, strip before hundreds of people on several occasions, no clothes to wear on the top half of the body (way to aggravate major insecurities), no shower for 3 hot summer days, no food for 5 days (except fruits and sweets which I outgrew in hours). It was a total nightmare. And all this religious torture was happening to me in a house filled with a million guests, some of which are seeing me after 10 years or so, coming together for the wedding. Well coming back to the topic in hand. I am not at all a fan of the Hindu wedding. No!! I am not on

Theres nothing I hate more than Travelling

Image
You know the drill. Book the tickets, pack your bag, go to the airport, board the flight and reach your destination. While some find it simple and easy, for me it causes severe anxiety and depression since I find travelling highly uncomfortable. I hail from a small town, so travelling to home is tricky for me. My flight takes me to the closest metropolis i.e. Kolkata from where I need to board a train to hometown which involves hours of cab/bus, waiting in the heat and hunger. So by the time I reach home, I am dehydrated, starved, sun burnt, stinky with sweat and from the most recent experience- ill. Few days back I came back from a horrible event at home- that would be my sister's wedding. Why horrible you ask?? Will let you know in another article. Same drill except that when you travel TO home, your excitement and joy of meeting your family masks most of your pain. Its going back to everyday life from a vacation like event that causes real pain. The synergy of unhappiness

One major Dream off the Bucket List

Every year in the month of April our college celebrates the annual fest called MIRAJ organised by a committee formed of students and some teachers. The college grants a sum of money to organise the event, the rest is raised through sponsors. Various different types of literary and non-literary competitions and entertainment events are organised, over a period of 3 days and prizes are given away on the last day of the event. It ranges from Treasure Hunt and Halo Tournament to Debate and Article writing. However the most anticipated event would be the Fashion show, where students from each semester put up a fashion show and compete against each other. Its kind of a big deal. The rules are simple. The competition is divided into 2 stages. The first one is based upon a theme chosen by the arts committee while the second is freestyle. This year the theme was 'Country Side'. Now I have always wanted to walk the ramp and this year would be the last chance to do so, so I spoke to th
