El Dorado, by Shakira: My Review
After waiting and praying to the latina 'goddess' for 3 years, she has finally blessed us with her next album 'El Dorado'. The 11th studio album of the Queen of the Spanish Language- Shakira is here and saying its fabulous would be a gross under statement.
Now about the name of the album, El Dorado (meaning 'the golden one') "was the term used by the Spanish Empire to describe a mythical tribal chief of the Muisca of Colombia, who, as an initiation rite, covered himself with gold dust and submerged in Lake Guatavita. The legends surrounding El Dorado changed over time, as it went from being a man, to a city, to a kingdom, and then finally an empire. A second location for El Dorado was inferred from rumors, which inspired several unsuccessful expeditions in the late 1500s in search of a city called Manõa on the shores of Lake Parime. Two of the most famous of these expeditions were led by Sir Walter Raleigh. In pursuit of the legend, Spanish conquistadors and numerous others searched Colombia, Venezuela, and parts of Guyana and northern Brazil for the city and its fabulous king. In the course of these explorations, much of northern South America, including the Amazon River, was mapped. By the beginning of the 19th century most people dismissed the existence of the city as a myth" says Wikipedia.
The captivating story of the golden tribe aside, the album became available on the 26th of May, 2017 and within the first 24 hours has topped the sales charts of 37 countries. Now I'm not going to bore you with the Track listing but just so you know there are 13 tracks on the record out of which 3 and a half songs are English and rest are Spanish. Now I know what you must be wondering when did I learn Spanish?? I haven't, I just listen to a lot of Spanish songs due to my love for Shakira and even though I don't understand anything its always a treat. You don't know who Shakira is if you haven't heard her in Spanish, her mother tongue.
One by one I will go through the most notable tracks on the record. BTW all tracks mentioned below are linked to youTube where you can view/listen to them and I recommend you do cuz its AAAhhmaaazzing.
Chantaje, Shakira feat. Maluma- Arguably one of the biggest hit of 2016, and the biggest international Spanish hit in a very long time, has been awarded 16 times platinum in USA alone and has 1.3 billion views on YouTube. Chantaje means Black mail and its an sensual duet between Shakira and the Colombian hit maker Maluma. Featuring Shakira in a pink wig and a pink pig, we get to see how amazing she moves even after having two kids, and looks 22 years old being twice of it almost. The song as well as the video is a must must must listen/watch.
La Bicicleta, Shakira feat. Carlos Vives- Another massive hit of 2016 was La Bicicleta featuring Shakira and another amazing Colombian hit maker Carlos Vives. A smash hit, winning 2 latin grammys and almost a billion views on youTube, the video features Shakira and Carlos cycling through the beautiful streets of Colombia, then to the beaches where they play football and dance. If amazing latin beats that make you dance whatever the mood is what you like, this is the song for a life time.
Among the other collaborations are Comme Moi featuring Shakira and French Rapper Black M, its English version What we said featuring MAGIC!. Theres a nice Perro Fiel featuring Shakira and Nicky Jam. But the most notable would be Deja Vu featuring Prince Royce. This amazing song has Shakira and amazingly talented Prince singing about love and Shakira shows off her Salsa moves that will sure give the dance goals of the season. Done with the collabs and smash hits I will get to the real tracks of the record featuring bare bones of the Diva.
Nada, by Shakira- Now this track will take your breath away. Spanish, Rock and Vocals when mixed, Shakira shines brighter than sun. Here she sings about how she cannot imagine spending a single day without her love and all the fame and money having no meaning, if she doesn't have 'him' by her side. Absolutely gorgeous track, it will get you so addicted you might stop going to college/office drunk in her emotions and tears.
Me Enamore, by Shakira- A light hearted, romantic, positive and happy happy song, with sick catchy beats to move ur hips to, Shakira does it again. She has a million ways to get you addicted to her and Me Enamore does just that, also depicting what a beautiful hopeless romantic Shakira is. Drunk in love, she is over the clouds feeling like the luckiest girl on the planet. The video features the love of her life Gerard Pique and she seems to be one really lucky girl, if you catch the drift. :p
When a Woman, by Shakira- Finally a song that I totally understood cuz its English. When a Woman is a powerful feminine centric song that speaks about the depths a woman goes to for her love. Amazingly addictive beats you could dance to, may give you goosebumps when she says "Only a woman can get this dark, Only a woman can bear the scars". So much of power, so much of emotion, so much of love.
Amarillo, by Shakira- It means 'yellow' but its surely not about jaundice. One of my favourite songs when I first heard the whole album, its reminiscent of 'Mariposas' from her second last album 'Sale el Sol' which meant 'Butterflies'. A contrast and combination of her high pitch light voice and low pitch high 'Vibrato', Amarillo is authentic and very very Shakira. So original, it reminds me of her past era of 'Oral Fixation'.
Coconut Tree, by Shakira- One of my absolute favourites, its a song you could fall asleep to and fall into the dreams of Hawaii. So soothing, so dreamy, so romantic it takes you to a trip around the world and all you would see would be sunny blue seas, golden sands and of course coconut trees. Just a random pic is here, to show what an absolute perfect live she lives.
Two more hon'b mentions would be 'Toneladas' meaning tons and another duet with Maluma called 'Trap'. All in all this is another amazing work of Shakira and it was absolutely worth the wait. 4.5 stars out of 5, cuz I wish there were more English songs. She truly makes me wanna learn Spanish, as Wycleaf Jean says in 'hips don't lie'. The more I listen, the more I'm growing fond of the songs as well as her voice. And there sure are many Latin Grammys waiting ahead for this work of art.
Heres an amazing live acoustic performance of Chantaje, Enjoy...
