Sushma Swaraj, A One Woman Army

Yesterday India lost one of its most popular, revered, trusted and beloved female politician, arguably in the entire Indian history. Sushma Swaraj was a leader of heights that very few politicians ever manage to reach, let alone women. A mother, a wife, a politician, a minister, a nationalist and above all a visionary who was filled with nothing but compassion for Indians everywhere which she proved in more ways than one during her tenure as the Foreign Minister of India.

On the day of her death, her last tweet was congratulating PM Narendra Modi for his bold and much anticipated decision to scrap article 370 of the constitution of India. She basically said- she lived this far to see this day come to reality, and then she left us. May Peace be hers. Her visions and words will guide India for centuries to come.

What I personally admired about her the most was her skills of oratory. When she spoke, the world listened. Be it UN, OIC or the Indian Parliament itself. Her vocabulary was impeccable, be it Hindi or English, her material would be thoroughly researched and her points explicable, believable and noteworthy. Her words would capture your attention and take you to a trip in the past, like a flashback, to bring to her present conclusion and justify the core of it. It was like a lioness's roar. You may disagree but you can't deny.

She was a Lawyer by profession, and has a long list of achievements under her belt. Some of them are-

  • Sushma Swaraj was a seven-time Member of Parliament and a three-time MLA.
  • She had many firsts to her credit such as being the youngest cabinet minister in the Haryana government in 1977, first woman Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998 and the first woman spokesperson for any national political party in the country.
  • She was External Affairs Minister from 2014 to 2019, leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014, Minister for Information and Broadcasting in Vajpayee Government from 2000-2003.
But her most defining role was- being the Foreign Affairs Minister of India, during which she set new highs and bars of standards that the ministry never saw before, in the entire history of our country.

  • She was the second Indian woman to become the External Affairs Minister, after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
  • She played a key role in resolving the Doklam standoff with China in 2017 and in India approaching the International Court of Justice (ICJ) challenging a Pakistani military court's death sentence to Kulbhushan Jadhav.
  • Through her extensive use of Twitter, Sushma Swaraj had earned a reputation of easily-accessible External Affairs Minister. She took a personal interest in resolving minor issues like issuance of visa to the needy and helped the Indian diaspora in distress through her social media outreach.
She was an excellent parliamentarian, a historian, a great debator, a socialist, a nationalist, and a daugter of India that is extremely proud of her. May she inspire more young women and men with her example, to lead a life for the country and its people, with the virtue of honesty, passion and compassion. She will be remembered, always.
