Darkness within: Fiction
Half dry and half dripping, Sabrina arrived at her office 25 minutes late. It was a rainy day in New Delhi and traffic was worse than usual. Closing her inverted, broken umbrella she looked ahead to find everyone standing away from their cubicles. Bipin, sujoy, Abhishek, Aparna etc everyone. They stared at her but did not spoke anything. Walking forward she looked at the boss's glass chambers. There were a few people sitting and a few standing- and Mr Jain was desperately trying to explain something to them. All sweaty and tearful, his statements suddenly got aggressive and loud and people throughout the floor could hear him- "YOU GUYS HAVE NO RIGHTS TO DO THIS...." "Ms. SABRINA!!!" someone yelled at her from her cubicle. Sitting in the dark was an old but tall, dark man with a hefty build. She moved closer and noticed he had humongous mustache and eyebrows. He stood up, to a towering 6 and a half feet. "I am Mr Ajay Maakan, from Anti-Corruption Bureau. Can we Talk in private?" and he made a gesture with his hand towards the adjacent glass chamber.
Sabrina, a young, average looking girl, hailing from a small town in Himachal was here to lead a life of independence, away from an ultra-conservative family, who are in a rush to give her away to anyone with a job and a penis. Managing kitchen and school together, then college with kitchen- her gender was exploited heavily by her family like any other Indian middle class family. The icing on the cake was her mother who treated her worse then a maid. This job was all she had. Even though it paid very less, but she worked with some wonderful and warm colleagues and people around her for once, appreciated and respected her for the amazing hard working girl she was.
Confused and shocked, Sabrina does as asked and walks into the empty glass chamber. He follows her and gestures her to sit down on a chair. The peon walks in with a tray full of tea cups and he offers him one, and when he is about to leave he looks at poor Sabrina and offers one to her too. She declines. Mr Ajay takes a sip of tea and says- "I am not ur enemy Ms Sabrina Kumar, I am just doing my job" He speaks with the contempt and stability of a High School Principal. His voice is somewhat soothing but his face and body is a nightmare. "Do you know what is going around here today Sabrina??" She shakes her head into an obvious No. "Tell me what does your firm do, u know, to earn money?" to which a polite and knowledgeable Kumar says- "Sir we here at Vandana Enterprises, import working parts of various weapon systems used by the Indian Defence from prime locations like Russia, Israel, Austria and Germany in large stocks at cheaper rates to sell it in smaller stocks and relatively higher prices to the Army, Navy and the Air Force". Maakan replies- "Interesting! and how much does your firm makes in a Fiscal?" Kumar-"Sir last fiscal we had a net income of 350 crores against a revenue of 1970 crores". Maakan-"Very good, and what was ur expenditure on buying the parts from the aforementioned countries?" Kumar-"Sir 450 crores" Maakan-"Good! and where did the rest of the money go?" Kumar- "Excuse me Sir!!" Maakan- "A revenue of 1970 crores, a profit of 350 crores upon expenditure of 450 crores, either this firm is run by beyond human geniuses or something is wrong with the accounting!!" Kumar-"Sir I have no idea what you are implying with this conversation and I have no knowledge of any........"
"Ms Kumar, as of today your firm is under investigation jointly under CBI and ACB for commercial treason against the Army, Navy and the Air Force, for supplying sub par spares at massive commissions, bought from countries that are grossly not our allies, thus giving away secret informations about our defence systems to them. As of today, your firm no longer exists, its accounts are frozen, no one has a job here, and everyone including you are under custody for further questioning and investigation. Submit your passports, bank passbooks, voter id cards and ur company and personal phones, devices. Your constitutional rights are suspended till further developments and you are not allowed to talk to anyone about the case".
Two strong men in uniform come in and ask her to follow them, everyone walks down the stairs in line with pin drop silence including the boss. People are filled into the buses, in groups of 30 and drove into the rain. An intense rage of thunder falls with a heavy rain and the day gets worse. Nobody knows whats going to happen next, or what they are supposed to do now. At least they have someone who would report them missing but Sabrina has no one.
That's the end of the first scene of my new story. Let me know if you liked it and stay around for further knowledge of Sabrina.
