VEEP: Comedy couldn't get any finer
It wasn't long time ago that I thought Modern Family was the best internationally acclaimed comedy series on TV, but change is what happens every time you think you know something. I watched the first season of Veep and realized theres nothing quite like it. A comical satire on American Politics, it spoke to me cuz it came awfully close to my perception of American Politics. And the curses- they are half the fun of that show. Universally critically acclaimed, its a sparkling Crown jewel of HBO.
So the plot revolves around a rich bred politician Selina Mayer, played by 'American TV's Meryl Streep'- Julia Louis Dreyfus, who dreams of becoming the first elected female President of the United States, but mostly for the perks and power, and not quite for the privilege and duties of the position. She is not a good orator, not an intellect, nor a fine stateswoman, and everyday is a disaster waiting to happen in her office. The show begins after she loses the election to a President Hughes and takes up his Vice President position. Unlike promised, the President cuts her off from any meetings, decisions, powers and leaves her desperate and dry, while her team of absolute incompetent staff creates a political tripping hazard for her every time she puts on her metaphorical heels. Her core team includes Amy, Mike, Dan, Sue and Gary. All the characters are absolutely unique and their personal lives are well woven into the show, and the disastrous effects of the office on their personal relations is depicted.
My fav staffers are- Gary, Sue and Jonah, the west wing liaison. So Gary is a confused, probably closeted 'bag man' of the veep, his job is like a mobile servant who follows Selina everywhere she goes, providing her with food, knowledge, feminine products and bitching gossips, basically fussing over her like a royal baby and while he loves Selina more than life itself, Selina treats him like an animal/slave/could u think of anything more degrading?? Sue on the other hand, maintains a work ethic like a robot's, is the only staffer whose professionalism and skills are never questioned, and she is damn mysterious. Basically no one knows anything about Sue's personal life. She just might as well be a Wakandan Spy at the end of season 8. Now we come to Jonah- A 7 feet tall caricature, so incompetent, sexist, misogynist, racist, gross, annoying, that its a trend in both wings of white house to curse him, so much so that staffers basically compete against each other as to who could come up with most vulgar curses and then hurl it into 'Jonad's' face. Some of the examples are- Jolly Green Jizz Face, MRSA infection, sentinent enema etc... and let me tell you this- he kinda deserves them all. LOL!!!
So theres basically nothing to complain about the show. The cast ensemble is genius, led by 9 times Emmy winner Julia Louis Dreyfus, the writing is astonishingly brilliant, the story line epic (kinda mimics Hillary's life), cinematography on point, and all characters are very well researched. Its close to perfection. However its going to be a very limited show with only 8 to 10 episodes of 20 mins each, for 8 total seasons. Its a remake of an Irish sitcom, and god! is it executed to perfection. I recommend all my readers to try Veep. Today morning when I read that Julia Louis Dreyfus comes from a long line of Billionaires, I thought to myself- she is too rich to develop such a passion and expertise for acting yet she did That's an Artist worth writing about. The show portrays a roller coaster ride of ups and downs for VP Selina Mayer and her life's ambition to become the president, she temporarily does achive that, for 8 months, causing scandals big enough to lead to a massive investigation into her administration. we will have to wait till Spring 2019 to see whether Selina does become the first 'elected' Female President of the USA, and I'm absolutely rooting for her, However scandalous it will be better than the current US Regime. What an Irony!!!
