Lady gaga's Joanne
Lady GaGa- A name synonymous with fame and enigma, has risen once again from her ashes with JOANNE in 2016. Her last album Cheek to Cheek even though a critical and commercial success( it won a grammy), failed to garner my attention simply because it was jazz, and I tried believe it or not but "This lady is a tramp" made my ears bleed so I couldn't go any further. But that's because of my personal indifference over jazz. Thank god, its not Jazz again with Joanne.
The fame/monster and Born this way led to an International acclaim so massive, its been achieved by very few in the history of music. Lady gaga became a household name, either worshipped or hated which often had less to do with her music, but more with her costumes, controversies and rivalries. Clearly this girl knew how to make global headlines, that's good publicity. There is no doubt that GaGa is an absolute musical genius, but the failure of Artpop to capture the market like it was supposed to, led many to question her instincts. It is one of my favourite albums ever actually, agree to disagree I guess. Lady gaga knew she had to demonstrate her talents to the world once again. A critically acclaimed jazz album with the legendary Tony Benette, and the jaw dropping performance of "The sound of music" at the Oscars were steps in right direction, the agenda is further continued by launch of Joanne, GaGa's 5th studio album.
Joanne is GaGa's middle name. The highly awaited album is her answer to notable releases by Adele and Beyoncé in 2016.The regular version has 11 tracks, according to Wikipedia its in the dance-rock and country music genre. The album focuses highly on her vocals, while the rest is pure background, and its done it well. The album showcases very raw voice of GaGa, beautiful and fresh as ever. The slightly masculine charm of her voice compliments the themes of the songs very well, transitions from soft funky to harsh loud rock is pure transcendence. The tracks aren't harsh on ears in spite of being rock. The songs are quite different, from each other as well as works of any other artist that I have heard. Here is an amateur analysis of few tracks that I loved on the album, must-hear types...
Joanne- The title track is beautiful soft song based primarily on guitar, where she is mourning over death/loss of a best friend/lover. The lyrics is very simple, the music is very soothing, and its overall a catchy track playing lightly on your emotions. Her voice is feminine, filled with pain and trauma. The song grows over you slowly.
Diamond Heart- This is a super catchy dance track speaking of a wild teenager just out of school, wounded by fake love, toughened by cold hearted father referred very creatively to as the cruel king, ready to soar above(run away) leaving behind all the pain, accepting one's flaws but with the confidence and self worth, of having a diamond heart.
A-YO- A powerful dance-rock track, packed with all the authentic GaGa goodness, influenced with euphoria, revenge and superiority complex, she talks about smoking a whole pack of Marlboro and blowing it up in ur face. Its super fashionable and catchy, clearly one of the finest tracks on the album featuring GaGa's voice transitioning from soft funky to fiery rock, it will just blow ur mind.
John Wayne- A very retro beginning with an electro pop end, another very catchy dance track where GaGa talks about being sick of every other man playing city games (fake love, no loyalty and commitment I guess), instead she is moving to the eye of the storm to satisfy her need of a real man, also wanting to get high at the same time.
Dancin in circles- Another beautiful dance track, where she talks about her infatuation over her love, in a very lonely life, where she feels good only when she touches herself( yeah! I think it means self pleasuring), the song having extremely catching beats ends with rather interesting Indian traditional music of sitar(I think its sitar but I'm not sure)
Perfect Illusion & Million Reasons- Both these tracks deal with heart break but in very different ways. On one hand Perfect Illusion is more pop-rock type displaying her anger, frustration over the illusion of love which was fake, on the other hand Million Reasons is soft, regretful departure from her lover because he gave her a million reasons to walk away. Both the songs are incredible jems of the album, especially given that they might have a lot to do with her personal life right now.
Overall this is an another amazing album by the global phenomenon of the century. I believe this will be a major critical and commercial success of the year, and might bag some Grammies next year too. These were some of my favourite tracks from Lady GaGa's latest album Joanne, which I would give a score of 4/5, and consider it one of her more/most sophisticated works. displaying her brilliant musical taste and instincts, and a voice which can touch millions of hearts.
Lady GaGa is back with a bang. Beyoncé and Adele, watch ur backs for Mother Monster is back and she knows no mercy. Go GaGa.
