The Goddess of Hollywood: Part II
Born to very humble parents in New Jersey in 1949, like all other great people she didn't had her carrier served to her on a silver platter. Decades of struggles, learning and theaters has got her here. Do you know she was rejected before she could even audition for the movie King Kong, cuz the producer thought she was too 'ugly'. Its an amazing story, look it up here. It happened in front of her and she gave a jaw dropping reply to that producer right then and there.
Here I will tell one of her most embarrassing stories ever. On her first Golden Globe nomination for 'Kramer vs Kramer', she had no idea how the award function roles. It was a lunch time award show and she thought would get over in an hour or so. Oh did I mention she wore her wedding gown to the awards cuz she had no money to buy a dress. Oh So adorable!!! She had just given birth to her first child and was breast feeding. Unfortunately the function went on for hours and hours and her mammary glands suddenly let go of all the fluids it was holding, all over her white wedding dress, in the theater while the award show was going on. She was mortified and that's when her name was called up cuz she had won!!! Her first ever Golden Globe. Click here to find out what happened next. It was a total nightmare.
So last time I talked about 3 movies which were- Julie and Julia, Doubt and The Iron Lady. Here I will tell u about 3 more of her must watch fabulous movies. Keep reading...
Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)
If you think Streep can only make you cry or jolt you from inside, then get ready to laugh. That's how she rolls. Whatever she does, its done to perfection. This is another biopic of hers, about multi millionaire heiress of New York, 1944 who loved music and had a great ambition to sing. Only problem- She was terrible at it. Quoted as "the worst singer in the world" by New York post, she was regularly applauded and praised by her loved ones just for the sake of it which inspires her perform a concert at Carnegie hall, the place where artists of the century like Lily Pons and Sinatra frequented. Having given away a thousand tickets to army men, coz of her patriotism and immense respect for them she is finally exposed to the truth about her technique and skills which kills her, literally. Even though the movie ends with tragedy, its hilarious through out. Streep actually took several Opera lessons cuz its said you have to be a good singer in order to act like you are bad at it and believe me when I say she nails it, I actually 'ROFLed' when I heard her. Apart it also stars Hugh Grant and our very own Howard Wolowitz from the big bang theory. It got her several nominations including Oscar and a Golden Globe. Here I leave you with the trailer.
August Osage County (2013)
Now this is a disturbing story, a Pultizer winning play made into a movie, produced by George Clooney, narrates a tale of family broken beyond repair. It is a dark story of a drug addicted wife(Streep) and alcoholic husband who kills himself cuz he didn't had it in him any more to survive his failed painful marriage. Based on Osage County of Oklahoma in a hot August time where the family gets together for the missing/dead father, a lot happens. Fights, screaming, secrets coming out, tears, insults, insecurities, hatred, affairs, divorces- everything that breaks a family. The 3 daughters- a frustrated divorcee(Julia Roberts), a slut and a saint each have their own devastating stories. So does the extended family. The movie is suffocating, dark, even traumatizing to some extent, only an art films lover should watch it but its a 24 carat Oscar material. The whole cast is phenomenal, and its magic when such eminent actors like Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep come together. For some reason this movie is actually a dark comedy, but I hardly smiled at all. It goes without saying both Streep and Roberts' stunning performance were nominated for Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA among many others. Here I leave you with the trailer.
Hope Springs (2012)
If you have had enough of dominating, ball crushing Meryl Streep characters, than this movie is just for you. Watch a very submissive, introvert, adorable housewife Kay (Streep) who misses the old intimacy, romance (and sex) in her marriage and wants to bring it back. But after 31 years being married, husband Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) thinks its unnecessary work and is far from the emotional types, grumpy actually. She finally speaks up and serves an ultimatum to see a marriage counsellor (Steve Carell) who then makes them speak and express and explore the affection, love and intimacy. Through a challenging episodes of conversation and exercises, he brings about a lot of ups and downs which initially fails, to a point of separation but resolves with mutual understanding and aspiration. A light watch, comical, emotional, adorable old couple brings back the love they had long thought was gone. The take home message was definition of love and marriage, and the importance of sex in it. After some time it was awkward cuz it felt like I'm watching and listening to my parents sex life. Gross!!! That aside, it was an adorable and one time must watch, just for the sake of watching Streep just be so simple and adorable. Both of them absolutely nail their performances. Here I leave you with the trailer.
So that's the end of my Meryl Streep blogging, will keep you updated with more. Ciao.
